Patrick was born in Germany and immigrated to Tasmania from the UK with his family as a child. He graduated from the University of Tasmania’s School of Art in 1986 majoring in furniture design and printmaking. Patrick has completed a number of public art projects and his studio furniture has been exhibited widely within Australia and internationally. He has developed a strong following in the United States where he has been a regular exhibitor at Sculpture, Objects Functional Art (SOFA Expo) in Chicago and New York.
Patrick Hall is best known for a series of aluminum-clad pieces of furniture made in the form of cabinets with drawers. Offering glimpses into how objects and their stories can tell us ‘what it is to be human’, he includes in each one, elements that leave his own observations of ‘traces and little evidences’. Hall thinks of these works as emotional filing cabinets and his obsession with objects and stories as an attempt to store memory.
